IT Support
If you’re paying for a managed IT service, you might be unaware of several things.
As part of any managed IT service it is quite common that your systems will be covered with software referred to as RMM – which stands for remote monitoring and management. It’s crucial for the success of a modern IT Support Company that their clients have this running on all desktops, laptops and servers.
But what does it do? Well, from the name alone you may be able to guess a few things, it monitors the health of the technology within your business. If there’s an issue, your IT company are alerted to the issue often before the client is aware of a problem.
Drives
A good example of this is remaining disk space. If a PC or server is running low on storage space this will automatically flag up on your IT company’s system. A major benefit of this pro-active approach to IT support is that the customer has minimal downtime.
Faults can be detected in advance too and a failing drive will often alert the RMM to an impending disaster. Consequently the drive can be switched at a convenient time.
Patching
Other features of RMM software include patch management which is essentially “automatic Windows updates”. This ensures that Windows updates are carried out when they are least likely to cause disruption.
RMM software allows your IT company to apply updates and “patches” outside of business hours. This again leads to less customer downtime.
Other convenient features to RMM software include the ability to automate tasks. For example, a scheduled reboot. Like most desktop PC’s and laptops – servers occasionally start to slow down. It’s just the nature of technology. When this happens, the best fix might be something as simple as a reboot of the server.
Rebooting the server during working hours can cause major disruption. Doing this out of hours minimises downtime and doesn’t eat into productivity.
Therefore, this is when a reboot script can be implemented using the RMM software which automatically schedules the reboot at a time when the server is not going to be in use. 5am on a Sunday morning is not uncommon.
Pro-Active IT Support
There are many other uses of RMM software, this is only a glimpse of the many features.
The main benefit is the pro-active approach to your business IT support requirement which helps ensure business continuity.
Consequently, the less downtime your business experiences, the more your business is productive; this is something the old “break-fix” IT support model fails at.
