Windows 10 Latest – What your business needs to know
Windows 10 has been out for 5 months now and Microsoft are extremely keen for users to upgrade. Users may have noticed the notification in the bottom right of their screen encouraging them to take the leap. Some very observant users may even have noticed the space on their system drive slowly getting lower as Microsoft sneakily send all the installation files to their computers.
Should my business be using Windows 10?
Windows 10 is a significant improvement to Windows 8 and with the welcome return of the traditional style start menu, many users are tempted to upgrade. There are other advantages of Windows 10 and some significant updates relating to the cloud which may come into play as businesses rely more on more on hosted services.
However, we are seeing many post-upgrade issues with compatibility, stability and reliability. It seems that there isn’t a day goes by that we don’t get a phone call from someone wanting to roll back to Windows 7 or 8. It would be unfair to blame Microsoft for all these problems, this is probably the smoothest Windows upgrade process we have seen to date, but with any major operating system upgrade there are always going to be issues with compatibility. This can cause serious problems when it comes to device drivers and applications such as Sage or ACT! CRM.
At Wilson Computers we’re a big fan of the saying “if it aint broken don’t fix it” so unless you’re really craving that killer feature or you can’t handle another day of Windows 8.1 tiles, we highly recommend holding off for now.
Surely we have to upgrade at some point?
Microsoft are offering a free upgrade until at least July 2016 so there is no urgency to make a decision at the moment. Unfortunately Microsoft support for older operating systems will eventually be phased out and 3rd party software vendors will also start requiring users to be up to date. We therefore suggest holding off until at least July and assessing your options at that point. We will be producing another mailshot at that time to let our customers know the situation and also our recommendations.
What about this annoying pop-up?
The pushy Windows 10 upgrade prompt can be removed with a bit of software. This will also free up some disk space if your computer has already downloaded the update files from Microsoft. We are currently offering to do this completely free of charge so feel free to give us a call and we can connect in remotely and provide this fix.
What if we want to upgrade?
We can assist with any upgrade. We firstly carry out an audit of your existing software and drivers to make sure everything is compatible and then we upgrade and test to make sure that everything works.
