First impressions
At Wilson Computers we have been testing pre-release versions of Windows 10 for nearly a year now and we have to say we’re impressed. Microsoft seem to have engaged properly with users and corrected many of the mistakes they made in Windows 8 and 8.1. The interface is drastically improved and some of the new features show great potential.
Should my business upgrade?
With Microsoft offering a free upgrade to Windows 10 in the first year, it’s very tempting to take the leap. We would recommend that businesses DON’T upgrade to Windows 10 straight away. There are always issues with new operating systems and it can take Microsoft a while to iron out teething problems. We feel it’s best to let others be the guinea pigs.
The other issue is compatibility. Devices such as printers and software such as Sage may not work properly with Windows 10. It’s very important to make sure everything is going to work before upgrading.
How do you upgrade?
Windows 10 will be available from July 29th and Microsoft have made it easier than ever to upgrade. With Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 it’s just a case of running their upgrade software. Providing everything goes OK and that your software and devices are compatible, upgrading should be quite painless.
Users may have already noticed the upgrade icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. While this makes it simple, we discourage users from upgrading without consulting with a company such as ourselves first. If you find this icon irritating, feel free to contact us and we can provide free advice on how to remove it.
Conclusion
Windows 10 looks like a great operating system and is a huge improvement on Windows 8. With the upgrade being free it does make sense for businesses to upgrade to take advantage of the new features and improvements. We do however feel it is unwise for businesses to be early adopters and that any upgrade should be properly planned and carried out by professionals to avoid problems. Wilson Computers can assist or advise on any upgrade so feel free to give us a call.
